Faulty shoes cause injury
02/01/12: Compensation has been awarded to a man who sustained chemical burns to his feet after wearing new shoes.
The incident occurred in April 2009 when Chris Heleine bought the pair of shoes in Leeds. The shoes retailed at £170 and were sold under the brand name of Sperry Top-Siders; though they were manufactured by Collective Brands, an American company.
Mr. Heleine then found serious blisters on his feet on holiday in Menorca, just hours after wearing them for the first time.
Mr. Heleine had to be treated each day all week to replace his dressings. Although he is cured, the chemical burns have left visible scars all over his feet.
He then went to the firm for compensation. His solicitor sent off the original shoes for analysis only to find that the shoes had high levels of a skin irritant.
The Yorkshire Post has reported that Mr. Heleine is due to receive an unspecified defective product liability compensation amount outside of court.
